The Loud Spring

Since the UN Conferences on Climate started in 1992, the annual CO2 emissions have not decreased. In fact, they increased by over 60%. – Why?

How would a society look that is capable of stopping climate change? And how can we get there?

In the global climate movement, it is becoming more and more common sense that we need a systemic change. But what kind of system do we want, and how do we get rid of the old one? In this film we discuss why there can be no such thing as green capitalism and we envision how a profound transformation of society could look. 

In a situation of rapidly growing public awareness of the devastating consequences of climate change, The Loud Spring addresses the elephant in the room: where does the power to actually change things come from?

When I became aware of the catastrophic dimensions of climate change (it was very late!) I wanted to provide everything that I had learned in my life as a media activist to the climate movement.

I had spent 20 years documenting workers’ struggles with my camera. Time and again I had seen how successful workers are when they fight back collectively.
I wanted to try and transmit those experiences in a condensed form to young people in the climate movement. They obviously need a new strategic approach, since demonstrations, petitions, and appeals to politicians have, over the last decades, done nothing to prevent the destruction of our livelihoods. There are systemic reasons for this, as capitalism is dependent on constant expansion, or, as Julia Steinberger puts it in the film: ‚Growth is the stabilization mechanism of capitalism.‘
So, the point is to get rid of capitalism. And we have to talk about how we can achieve that and what to replace it with. The marginalization of the position of workers in the media since the 1980s has led to many young people in the European climate movement, having no concept of how crucial the structural power of workers is when it comes to getting rid of capitalism.
I wanted to make a film that explains why the structural powerlessness of the climate movement will continue as long as it continues to ignore the structural power that people have on their workplaces.

I was happy to be able to interview Andreas Malm and Julia Steinberger for The Loud Spring, both superstars of the climate movement. Steinberger has co-written the latest IPCC report and takes part in actions of civil disobedience and Malm is inspiring the climate movement with books like ‚How To Blow Up A Pipeline‘.

The insights into the political activism of trade union activists from Great Britain (AngryWorkers) and Poland (Inicjatywa Prazownicza) are equally essential to the film.

Finally, I was excited to develop a piece of fictional storytelling: 12 minutes in The Loud Spring describe the first days of a revolutionary uprising in 2024 Berlin, when the people begin to take over essential production and connect themselves with other regions in upheaval.

The time when it was easier to imagine the end of the world rather than the end of capitalism has to end. I wanted to contribute to that shift.

Ist ein Kollektiv aus drei Frauen, die Filme über Kämpfe am Arbeitsplatz sammeln, produzieren und zeigen. Die von ihnen betriebene Internetseite labournet.tv ist ein Online-Archiv für Filme aus der Arbeiter*innenbewegung – alten und neuen – aus allen Teilen der Welt. Im Zentrum stehen die Situation der Lohnarbeiter_innen, ihre Selbstorganisierung in historischen und aktuellen Arbeitskämpfen.

Die Filme nehmen die Perspektive der Arbeiter_innen ein. Sie erzählen von Selbstbehauptung, Solidarität und Emanzipation. Bisher umfasst das Archiv 1000 Videos aus 60 Ländern, jedes Jahr kommen 50 neue dazu.

Seit 2017 betreibt labournet.tv die Veranstaltungsreihe Cinéma Klassenkampf, in der Videos von gerade laufenden Streiks und Mobilisierungen gezeigt werden und aktive Kolleg_innen aus erster Hand berichten. Die Veranstaltungsreihe wird 2022, nach einer Unterbrechung wegen der Pandemie, wieder aufgenommen.
