What does aging mean in a society when lives become longer? With their friend’s camera, two young filmmakers follow four regulars of Hamburg’s FALTENROCK party scene, where you have to be over 60 to get in. Mechthild, Christiane, Volker, and Christian fly to China, love the symmetry of their bux tree, they volunteer for refugees and disappear into the realm of Facebook for three hours at a time. Dealing with our own vision of age always means confronting society’s image of it. The documentary FALTENROCK wants to move between those images and challenge our own ideas about retirement. Do we need a new definition of “old”? Empathizing with different lifeworlds also means understanding that anything is possible. Only one thing is certain: Retirement doesn’t have to mean that life is coming to a standstill.

The film aims to create a connection between two worlds. As nice as it may have been to make a disco for older people possible for those who previously had no place to go, it is also inevitably (?) a space of demarcation. Because as a young person, you are not welcome there without older company.
Standing at the bar month after month and being part of this event has enriched us greatly. Through dance, we have gotten to know people who are in a completely different phase of life to us. In some respects, however, the search they have to embark on after finishing their working lives is not so different from our own. It would be nice if the film opened a door. If we didn’t have to draw such clear boundaries between old and young. In this respect, the film is aimed at people of all ages. Because dance unites. And in the best case, through the camera. Unlike 10 years ago, the ‘over 60s’ age group has increasingly become the focus of public interest. However, this interest is primarily aimed at a commercial target group to which new products, activity programmes and internet forums are being adapted.
The individual people behind this category still seem to have little presence in public life. At the same time, the desire for self-determined aging with dignity is very great. How we achieve this depends on each individual. This also means seeing ourselves as an intergenerational community, far removed from our tax bureaucracy. And only if we remain attentive to the needs of others can we create the conditions for respectful co-existence into old age. Perhaps this film will enable us to contribute to this understanding.
