docfilm42 in December

Dear docfilm42 community,
1,985 refugees have lost their lives in the Mediterranean this year. Since 2014, a total of over 30,000 people have drowned. The number of unreported cases is likely to be even higher. Figures that are frightening. And all this is happening, although this sea region is the most heavily monitored in the world.

That these deaths are being condoned by European countries is also shown by the fact that voluntary sea rescuers are being increasingly harassed.
Only recently, a new law has been passed in Italy that “forces sea rescuers not to help people in distress at sea if they already have refugees on board”.

This makes films that show what is actually happening in the Mediterranean, far from the public eye all the more important. Our film of the month ONE HUNDRED FOUR shows a sea rescue in real time and has received numerous awards for this, including the Golden Dove 2023 at DOK Leipzig.

More information about the next doc&talk online screening on Sunday, 15 December 2024 with ONE HUNDRED FOUR can be found below. Registration here and below.

And now some good news: We have a new YouTube channel!

Our online events are always accompanied by intensive film discussions. We have recorded a number of them and have now edited them together for you.
From now on, we will be publishing the film talks on a weekly basis.

We start with the film talk about OUT IN EAST BERLIN, a film about homosexuality in the GDR, with directors Jochen Hick and Andreas Strohfeldt and the protagonists Bettina Dziggel, Christian Pulz, Peter Rausch and Wolfgang Beyer.
Moderation and editing: Erik Lemke (filmmaker and docfilm42 member).

Next week we will publish the film talk from November 2023 with Robert Krieg (filmmaker), Moshe Zuckermann (emeritus professor of history and philosophy at Tel Aviv University), Irit Neidhardt (sociologist and film distributor) about the film I CAME TO PALESTINE ….
Moderation and editing: Angela Zumpe (filmmaker and docfilm42 member).

Shortly before Christmas, you can look forward to the discussion about GOLDRUSH – THE STORY OF THE TREUHANDANSTALT. Rudolf Hickel, economist, professor emeritus of finance and founding member of the Alternative Economic Policy Working Group, gave us a well-founded insight into the events surrounding the Treuhand.
Moderation and editing: Eberhard Spreng (filmmaker and docfilm42 member)

Our docfilm42 members can also make a note of our next internal digital regulars’ table in the new year on 14 January 2025 on the topic ’How does my film reach the audience? – an exchange with tips and tricks’.

Online doc&talk – ONE HUNDRED AND FOUR
Sunday, the 15.12.2024, 19:00 o’clock

ONE HUNDRED AND FOUR
Director: Jonathan Schörnig, 93 minutes, 2024, FSK 12

How a sea rescue can take place is beyond imagination. The real-time documentary ONE HUNDRED AND FOUR brings this dramatic situation closer. The film shows how agonisingly long it takes to rescue 104 people from a sinking rubber dinghy. Person by person, step by step, the action is accompanied by several parallel cameras. The situation comes to a head when the Libyan coastguard appears. The rescued people and the crew wait for days on the high seas, as no Mediterranean country will allow them to dock. Only after a terrible storm does the ship reach a European harbour.

Followed by a film discussion with Jonathan Schörnig (director), Adrian Then (producer) and Sea-Watch (inquired).
Moderation: Ole Elfenkämper
